This weekend, Walker's mentality will be tested. "It's a back-and-forth game, and I can still use that to set something else up." "I have another pitch to counter that," he said. So far this season, that hasn't been the case. In the past, Walker said, he'd dwell on having missed his spot. He locates it a touch too far outside, and it's called a ball. To illustrate his new mindset, Walker brought up a scenario: Coaches have called for a pitch on the outside part of the plate, on the black for a called strike. "He's believing in himself and telling himself that he's better than whoever's in the box, and that he's gonna beat them no matter what." "I saw the look in his eye when he came off the bus - he was ready to go," UO junior Kenyon Yovan said. The new attitude has been palpable, most recently on Sunday at Hawaii.
"So I just kind of took that to heart, and kept telling myself I belong here. "In my meetings before winter break with the coaches, our biggest thing for me was, I just needed to believe in myself and stop being negative," Walker said. The point of the video was to get Walker to believe it, too. Walker had the stuff to put up better numbers, coaches believed. It was Thomas who made Walker a cut-up of all his strikeouts from last season, when the 6-foot-3 righty went 2-2 with a 5.60 ERA primarily out of the bullpen. And, Walker said, he got an assist over the winter from the Ducks' new director of player development, former UO outfielder Brett Thomas. He's taken cues from veteran members of the staff including Cole Stringer and Nico Tellache. The UO coaching staff, both last spring and this season under Wasikowski, has helped him mature, he said. "When you get into conference play, not only do you scale back the roster size that you travel with, but you scale back the number of starters, going from four games on a weekend to three," said UO coach Mark Wasikowski, whose team is scheduled to open a three-game series with the Bruins on Friday at 6 p.m. Walker started the fourth game of that series, but he's in the three-man rotation as Oregon enters the start of Pac-12 play this weekend at UCLA. In his most recent appearance, this past Sunday at Hawaii, Walker salvaged the series finale for the Ducks by throwing eight two-hit innings. In all that work he's allowed just two earned runs, both coming home on a two-run homer allowed at Grand Canyon on Feb. Walker, a junior right-hander for the Oregon baseball team, has throw 21 1/3 innings across five outings so far this spring, three of them starts.
